The Tall Ships Regatta
The Falmouth - Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta will be taking place from the 28th of August until the 9th of September 2014. It will consist of two grand Tall Ships events and a spectacular race which is organised by Sail Training International (STI). This will be one of the biggest international sailing events ever hosted solely in English waters.
From 28 to 31 August the Falmouth Tall Ships Regatta 2014 will take place. During this event there will be four days of different festivities and activities in all of Falmouth including musical events, Tall Ship viewings, a crew parade and a fireworks display on the final evening. On the 31st of August there will be a Parade of Sail when the ships are leaving Falmouth and getting ready for the Race.
The race will start on the 31st of August at around 4:15 pm in Falmouth Bay. From there on the ships have approximately two-and-a-half days to get to the finish line South-West of Portsmouth using only their sails and the current. Each ship has received a rating by STI, the Tall Ships Regatta's coordinating organisation. The rule of rating and a time correction factor are applied to the ships results. This way each ship should have an equal chance of winning. After the finish the participating Tall Ships sail on to Royal Greenwich, London in the so called 'Cruise in Company'. They will then probably arrive in Greenwich on either 4 or 5 September.
On the 4th of September the first Tall Ships will arrive in Royal Greenwich, London, for the Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta & Festival. During the Sail Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta, starting on the evening of the 4th there will be ships moored in and along the river Thames on 5 spots:
Near Royal Arsenal Woolwich Pier there will be approximately 16 Tall Ships moored. Many of these will be taking part in the cruises up the river Thames. At Wood Wharf, West India Docks, there will be approximately smaller 25 Tall Ships moored. At the Victoria Deep Water Terminal 6 larger Tall Ships will be moored. The Dar Mlodziezy will be moored near Enderby's Wharf. And finally there will be 6 smaller Tall Ships moored near Greenwich Pier.
The Tall Ships Festival takes place from 5 to 9 September. During this great event there will be many happenings such as performances by various artists, fireworks displays on every night, a crew parade and many activities for young and old. The Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta 2014 will end with the Parade of Sail, in which all participants will take part when they leave London together on the 9th of September, thus ending the entire Falmouth - Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta.
